DOOMSERV PLAY TIPS |
|
Again, much thanks to r , Shloader and other "Doomservers" for their tips and input.
NOTE: It has been brought to my attention that compression may not affect speed of game. I was given several examples of pings with and without software compression with modems, showing no difference in pings. However, there are quite a few bulletins on other games which say that removing compression makes for a better game over the internet.

USING THE INTERNET TO CONNECT DOOM95 GAMES |
Doom95 needs a network to play over. The internet is the biggest network of all. There are programs like HEAT, KAHN, and the biggest one, KALI which have servers, provide chat, and provide a means to connect Doom95 players by using code which simulates a lan environment. For example two players across the country both connected to one of those services, they will be using ipx protocol to play the game, since they are connected to the same server. How, then can one person at one IP address reach across the miles and connect to another person, using Doom95 at another IP address? The answer is complicated, but for the average user, no. Doom95 launches doomlnch.dll which is the interface you see when you startup the game. It asks for which type of game you want to play, or what connection. Basically every connection available is not a "public" connection. Meaning you have to be on a type of network before it can find or launch a game. When you join a game it first found it by searching within addresses that don't have to be resolved (changing an xxx.xx.xxx.xxx type address to a name such as dialup.myservice.com). Doom95 does not resolve addresses, and doomlnch.dll certainly can't do that for you. That is why there is no way to type in an ip address in order to join that game. If you are already connected to another computer in some type of private network, that is where Doom95 does well to connect players. Unless using a gaming service, you cannot reach another player using the logic that the two of you are connected to the internet. It works with a lot of games out there, but Doom95 wasn't created for that purpose. I'm working on the ICQ part, since I know there is a way to play Doom95 using ICQ. I'm working on that part. Look for updates in the near future. |
